Session description

Too often, educators are asked to change their instruction to incorporate current trends in the field. In this session, participants will engage in hands-on, interactive activities to distinguish between supportive instructional tools and tools that can distract or undermine learning goals. Let's choose the best tools for our kids!

Outline

Agenda:
Fad vs Meaningful Development? - Participants will review 20th century educational tech developments and discuss the question: How do we tell the difference between a fad and a meaningful development? Participants will be introduced to the concept of "Edtools instead of Edtech." Our goal is to identify tools that will meaningfully improve the student learning experience. (Time: 10-15 minutes).

Lesson Simulations - Participants will experience two different lesson simulations. One will be "Tech Gone Wild," where there are too many tools and none of them are serving the purpose of deepening learning. The second will be "Purposeful and Targeted," where the teacher layers analog and digital tools to build deeper access to the content and cultivate student agency. All participants will be engaged actively as students. There will be a debrief after the simulations for participants to share their reflections. (Time: Depends on the length of the session. 25-35 minutes.)

EdTools Research Project: Participants will engage in a collaborative "research" project using the session google classroom to explore examples of analog and digital tools. Each participant will walk away with a personalized plan they would like to try in their school. (Time: Depends on the length of the session. 15-25 minutes)

Additional Process Notes:
-I always leverage Kagan cooperative learning techniques and other total participation techniques to model equitable learning strategies
-In addition to designing a session google classroom, I will either create a live nearpod or pear deck to model interactive slides with participants.
