Session description

Professional learning experiences offer an incredible opportunity to empower educators to stretch their practice. However, too often, these events are one-size-fits-all events. Together, we will explore a professional learning design cycle focused on priming, ushering, launching, socially constructing, and extending the learning loop beyond one-time engagements.

Outline

Introduction (15 minutes)
- Welcome and introductions
- Inclusion activity
- Overview of the workshop and its goals
Define professional learning, including how it can be more purposeful and personalized
- Introduce the PULSE professional learning design cycle

Establishing Purpose (30 minutes)
- Distinguish between "categories" and "purposes" of professional learning
- Discuss the importance of purpose in driving planning, facilitation, and enrollment
- Engage in a group activity to identify the purpose of a professional learning experience
- Explore strategies for communicating purpose to learners

Prime the Experience (30 minutes)
- Discuss the importance of priming learners for professional learning
- Explore strategies for inviting and investing learners prior to the engagement
- Understand the importance of "generous exclusion"
- Discuss strategies for diagnosing needs and setting expectations
- Create anticipation through engaging pre-work or activities

Usher Learners into the Space (30 minutes)
- Consider ways to create an alternate world that provides a break from learners' day-to-day experience
- Seize threshold moments to make a positive first impression
- Practice hosting techniques to create a welcoming and inclusive environment
- Explore strategies for setting the seats (not just the stage) to facilitate collaboration

Launch the Learning (30 minutes)
- (Re)consider ways to begin or "launch" professional learning engagements
- Facilitate inclusion activities to promote belonging and participation
- Set goals and norms for the session
- Avoid logistics that detract from collaborative energy
- Provide space for learners to explore and refine practices

Socially Construct New Approaches (30 minutes)
- Collaborate around ways to support learners in socially constructing new approaches
- Explore strategies for collaborating with text and video
- Share strategies and examples of effective social construction
- Practice applying learning to real-world scenarios
- Facilitate reflection on the learning process

Extend the Learning Loop (30 minutes)
- Explore opportunities to continue learners' engagement beyond the synchronous session
- Discuss face-to-face collaboration options
- Explore virtual collaboration tools and strategies
- Facilitate solo reflection and planning activities

Reflection and Q&A (15 minutes)
- Process learning through individual reflection
- Engage in group discussion to share insights and challenges
- Answer questions and address potential implementation challenges

Throughout the workshop, interactive activities, discussions, and case studies will be incorporated to engage participants and reinforce learning.
