Session description

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to enhance and transform mathematics teaching and learning. Thus, it is essential to prepare preservice teachers to use artificial intelligence in meaningful ways. We adhere to UNESCO's (2024) "AI Competency" framework for educators, which includes the following aspects: human-centered mindset, ethics of AI, AI foundations and applications, AI pedagogy, and AI for professional development (PD). Thus, we will describe how AI can be integrated into a secondary mathematics methods course. Particularly, we provided professional development training and will highlight features of how students can teach geometrical content with an AI (FullProof.io) and reflect on means to assess learning. We will also draw on lessons learned to inform future research that could be explored.

Outline

During the introduction (10 minutes), we describe why it is essential to integrate AI into mathematics teaching and learning and briefly discuss the UNESCO (2024) AI Competency Framework: Aspects and progression levels for educators. Subsequently, we will ask teachers to provide a brief insight into how they attend to the aspects and progression of the framework within their practice (5 minutes). Afterward, we will illustrate various AI that support visualization and problematization in mathematics (10 minutes). Subsequently, we will demonstrate how FullProof.io can support the development of mathematical reasoning and proof while addressing the UNESCO (2024) AI competency framework (20 minutes). We will allocate 10 minutes to amplify the importance of planning to address constraints and ethical concerns when using AI. We will conclude (5 minutes) by reflecting on strategies that could be further used to integrate AI into mathematics.
