I graduated in the city of Leiria (ESEL), with a degree in Basic Education Teacher of Physical Education. My professional school path began in 2002 in Madeira Island, Portugal, and since that moment I started working in schools as a ICT teacher and ICT coordinator. In 2013 I finished my Master's Degree in Education Sciences, Specialization in Educational Informatics, by the Portuguese Catholic University. Currently I am coordinator of Computer Science, of the primary schools in Madeira and responsible for the international partnership of the Hour of Code (Code.org project)

Session description

The rise of artificial intelligence shows why it's important that this topic be studied and understood by digital citizens — our students. With this session, fun and engaging unplugged activities will help to contextualize artificial intelligence and its components.

Purpose & objective

The development of activities and moments related to Computer Science, and in this specific case of Artificial Intelligence, is one of the new challenges for education professionals. Its integration in educational contexts can help students to understand the characteristics and essential points of Artificial Intelligence, that are fundamental for a better perception of the world.
The main objectives of this presentation are:
- Understand what is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning;
- Development of unplugged activities;
- Enhance the integration of Artificial Intelligence in schools.

Outline

For this presentation, participants need a pencil and an eraser, and 5 exercises will be developed, accompanying the presentation of the concepts of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
The exercises are individual, but can also be performed in groups of 2 to 3 elements. At the end of each exercise, suggestions from the participants can be heard or even at the end of the presentation.
