Digital Learning Specialist, Author, and Consultant
Laurel Aguilar-Kirchhoff is a former teacher who now serves as a digital learning specialist/consultant/ISTE author. Laurel works with educators to successfully integrate educational technology into the curriculum for student learning outcomes. Her areas of expertise include digital citizenship/media literacy, blended learning, educational technology, and innovation. Laurel provides instructional practices to educators across the world as the instructor for ISTEU Digital Citizenship course and as an adjunct university professor. Her ISTE book, “Bring History and Civics to Life: Lessons and Strategies to Cultivate Informed, Empathetic Citizens,'' was released 2022. Laurel was named ISTE 20 to Watch in 2023.

Session description

This session demystifies student data privacy laws for teachers, coaches and everyone in education! We will break down the acronyms FERPA, COPPA, CIPA and more, as well as make real classroom/district connections. Connecting to digital citizenship and media literacy, this fun and informative session is for ALL educators.

Purpose & objective

Participants will be able to:
-decode student data privacy acronyms and understand applications of federal laws for classroom, site, and district levels.
-make explicit connections to student data privacy to the ISTE standards for educators and students.
-explain how student data privacy laws are relevant to their practice at the classroom, site, and district level.

Technology intervention/Model/Instructional Activity:
-This will be presented through Nearpod (with Google Slides presentation) with interactions for participants to check for understanding. The use of Time to Climb gamification activity will be utilized to check for understanding and provide time for Q & A.

Evidence of Success:
-Participants will leave with resources for reference that are shareable, along with strategies and resources to use with students to help understand digital citizenship, intellectual property and digital footprints.
