Session description

Learn how one school used NDI Technology and a NewTek TriCaster to live-stream its annual Color Wars competition. We helped foster student voice and creativity through a unique mixture of student-produced parody commercials and live sports and activities coverage.

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn a creative model for instructing students in the use of broadcast equipment.

Participants will be introduced to how to produce a Live-Streaming event: how to storyboard, scriptwrite, plan a production, delegate responsibilities, encourage creativity and create opportunities for student leadership.

Participants will learn how to utilize NDI Technology for low-latency video streaming.

Outline

Introduction (15 minutes): A narrative of how live-streamed Color Wars came to be, the challenge of not only getting the technology working, but also how we got students to participate. We will discuss the particulars of NDI Technology for low-latency video streaming. We will be showing clips from our live streaming event so Attendees can see our work in action.

Student Presentation (15 minutes): Student Presenters discuss their personal experiences working on the project and what they learned. The audience will then have the opportunity to ask Student Presenters questions.

Main Activity I: (15 minutes) Attendees will be put into groups of 4 and asked to create their own commercials using the parameters we provide. Student and Adult Presenters will circulate and help Attendees formulate original ideas and scripts.

Main Activity II (15minutes): Attendees will then be challenged to film their commercials using whatever technology is readily available. Attendees will then have the opportunity to submit their commercials using a URL the presenters will provide The finished commercials can then be shared during and after the conference.
