A veteran educator of 25 years, Dr. Washington is a former elementary school teacher and Reading Specialist turned Educational Technology lover. She served as a Digital Learning Specialist and coordinated Instruct Tech for a school system for many years. Her current position as an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education allows her opportunities to provide a foundation in literacy, inclusion, and pedagogy to a generation of educators. Her areas of expertise include digital tools to support productivity, literacy, early childhood education, culturally relevant pedagogy, curriculum design, research, and data visualization and she has trained educators nationwide related to these topics.

Session description

Need to visually communicate trends in usage, student data or evaluations to set relevant, timely goals? Create effective, personalized, reusable data dashboard templates that can be used to develop actionable strategies for your school or program. Personalize attractive visualizations of key data segments using edtech tools and sources you already have.

Purpose & objective

Educational or infrastructure challenge/situation.
Intro: Icebreaker
Participants will generate a list of when they need to utilize data.
Discuss the how and why of Data visualizations
Technology intervention: Utilizing Google Slides, Color Pickers, Chrome Extensions, logo makers, etc to create attractive Data Visualizations.

Models employed: I will utilize the Gradual Release Model: modeling, supporting and scaffolding, and allowing time for participants to explore and create at each step.
Evidence of success: Each participant will showcase use of tools, and Chrome extensions and processes to create a personalized dashboard template with faux graphs.
They will create an example dashboard with 1. logo, 2. matching color 3. two graphs 4. texts and 5. hyperlink
