Session description

Social media is a powerful tool for story-telling, community-building and outreach that schools and school libraries shouldn't ignore! In this session, learn how to leverage that for your libraries or schools, how to grow your following and engagement, and how to be more effective and efficient in communication and outreach.

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn to develop clear goals and use those to drive decisions on which social media platforms to use and how to use them.

Participants will gain some insight into the different strengths and weaknesses of common social media platforms (like facebook, twitter, instagram, and tiktok) and how to identify which platform/s will best serve their school library or schools' individual needs.

Participants will understand various strategies and approaches to using social media for a school library or school's outreach and community-building goals.

Supporting research

See "presenter background" for some insight into the demand for this topic. When I presented on this at American Library Association this past summer the conference room my session was assigned was packed full, standing room only. There is a definite hunger by school library professionals, and other education professionals, to be able to leverage social media and yet a hesitancy or uncertainty about it, as many adults don't feel savvy enough to tackle the project. My presentations break it down in a way that makes the attendees feel comfortable and capable of taking on the social media challenge.
