Session description

With the proliferation and integration of AI tools into our daily lives, the need for AI literacy is paramount for our students. Experience activities incorporating AI literacy that teach AI fundamentals, ethical implications, and practical applications while fostering critical thinking (wonder), creativity (joy), and digital citizenship.

Outline

1. Introduction & Overview (10 minutes)

Content: Introduction to the concept of AI Literacy and its growing importance in education. Briefly share the session objectives.

Engagement: Demonstrate using ChatGPT for a fun, engaging task(generating a creative story about visiting San Antonio for the first time). Pose a quick reflection question: “How might AI spark wonder in the classroom?”

Process: Attendees will complete a mentimeter to share initial thoughts. Small group discussion on how AI has impacted their personal or professional lives.

2. The Fundamentals of AI Literacy (15 minutes)

Content: Discuss basic AI concepts: What is AI? How does it work? Address common misconceptions. Include AI applications in daily life and education.

Engagement: Attendees will complete short quiz that challenges their knowledge and addresses misconceptions.

Reflection: Reflect with participants learned from the quiz using a google doc or possibly a padlet.

3. AI Ethics & Digital Citizenship (15 minutes)

Content: Explore ethical concerns surrounding AI, such as bias, privacy, and the importance of digital citizenship.

Engagement: Case studies of ethical dilemmas in AI. Groups receive short scenarios where AI has been used inappropriately, and they discuss potential solutions.

Process: Small group discussions (4-5 people) and sharing of key ideas and learning on a google doc or padlet.

Participants will be given access to all case studies at the conclusion of the session with teacher guidance and tips for implementation.

4. Practical Classroom Applications of AI Literacy (20 minutes)

Content: Demonstrate various resources or AI tools educators can use to introduce AI literacy to students.

Engagement: Interactive stations or a rotating "AI tool carousel" where participants engage with different AI tools. Attendees experiment with AI, generating real-time content. Tools include (but not limited to) Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Magic School, etc.

Process: Attendees rotate every 5 minutes through stations, working with AI tools and completing short tasks. They reflect on potential classroom uses via a google doc or padlet.

5. Designing AI Literacy Activities for the Classroom (15 minutes)

Content: Strategies for embedding AI literacy in existing curricula. Examples of projects and lessons that align with critical thinking, creativity, and digital citizenship will be provided as exemplars.

Engagement: Attendees design an AI-based activity for their classroom or subject of their choice. They can collaborate with others teaching similar subjects or grade levels to develop practical lesson ideas.

Process: Attendees can work in pairs or small groups to develop a mini-lesson plan to share via a a google doc or padlet. We will highlight some lesson plans depending on time constraints with time for feedback.

6. Reflection & Action Planning (10 minutes)

Content: Reflect on the session and plan for next steps in implementing AI literacy.

Engagement: Participants reflect on a key takeaway from the session and share via a google doc or padlet. They will write one action item to implement in their classroom.

Process: Individual reflection followed by group sharing.

7. Q&A and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

Content: Question & Answer with final thoughts on the future of AI in education.

Engagement: Address questions and share resources. Encourage participants to set reminders for their goal and do a check in on their individual progress for a later date possibly with another attendee from the session for accountability purposes. attendees to stay connected and collaborate post-session.

Process: Conclude with showing the resources and pointing out their use.
