Catherine Masrour is a librarian educator living on Long Island. She is the 2022 SSLMA School Librarian of the Year. Catherine has a doctorate in Education: Learning and Leadership and her interests are in the Library Learning Commons model, 21st-century learning, makerspaces, reluctant readers, and ELL students. She runs a non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting STEM enrichment opportunities for students in her community. And, she is a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Morocco.

Tim Needles is an artist, educator and author of STEAM Power. He’s a TEDx Talk speaker, technology integration specialist, and teaches art and emerging media at Smithtown Schools and Five Towns College. His work has been featured in the New York Times, NPR, Columbus Museum of Art, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. He’s the recipient of ISTE’s Technology in Action and Creativity Award, NAEA’s Eastern Region Art Educator Award & ArtEdTech Outstanding Teaching Award, and The Rauschenberg Power of Art Award. He’s also a board member of NYSCATE, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, an ISTE Community leader and NAEA ArtMediaTech chair.

Session description

Discover collaborative tools and successful projects to engage students through a partnership with the school library. Explore a variety of work featuring everything from puppetry to the metaverse to multimedia making with different curriculum areas. You'll interact with hands-on activities exploring STEAM collaborations for any level.

Purpose & objective

As technology continues to evolve it is necessary to support teachers with professional development regularly and that job is often relegated to the growing role of edtech coaches in schools as well as library media leaders. The purpose of our presentation is to share successful practices and projects developed in collaboration of both these roles in supporting teachers and students. We will share lesson plan that were developed with emerging technologies in various subjects with a range of topics from AR and VR to gamification and video with tools including Adobe Express, We Video, Google Sites, and many others. Participants will create examples together as a model that can be used in their schools.
