Dr. Jodi Zeis has served in the education field for over twenty five years. In that she she has had the privilege to teach at every grade level k-12 in a combination of general and special education classrooms. Additionally, she has served as an administrator at both the school and district levels. Dr. Zeis also works with pre-service teachers at the university level. She is most interested in teacher leadership and supporting teachers new to a district. She loves collaborating to develop engaging and relevant curriculum across grade levels and content.

Session description

Designed for most subject areas, this hands-on session not only introduces participants to Canva, which is free for districts, but it also engages attendees in hands-on experiences as they dive into the tool. Examples of how to use it for student-centered learning will be shared.

Purpose & objective

Participants will be able to identify how this tool promotes student choice and independence in learning, creating, and sharing. Participants will be able to access Canva, and utilize the tools to choose their type of presentation and they will learn how to engage with the templates, text, recording, and music features.
Participants will identify how components of this tool support diverse students in a student led learning environment.
The model for this presentation is a loose I do, we do, you do, with an introduction activity and overview in the beginning.
Student samples from our district of engaged learning using this tool at elementary, middle, and high will be shared.

Outline

-Introduction visual activity (with resources from Canva)- How do you best describe engaging students in choice and authentic learning (4 picture activity)
-Overview of what Canva is and why it is an incredible tool for students with learning disabilities, students who do not speak English fluently, for project based and problem based learning, collaboration and more.
-Teachers log on; presenter walks through the landing page and describes those choices
-Together we all click on worksheet; work through all the features (template, elements, text, video, audio and we each create. Some share with presenter to show
-Wish list- what is one unit you have been striving to create engagement with? Share with a partner-
-Dive in to create a one pager using tools we have seen to brainstorm ways to engage students authentically using this tool
