Cassie Frost, M.S.Ed, ATP has been in the special education field for fifteen years, specializing in utilizing technology with students who struggle with emotional and behavioral disabilities, autism, and behaviors resulting from intellectual or learning disabilities. Cassie is a member of the WI Assistive Technology Advisory Council, the President-Elect of the Wisconsin Council for Exceptional Children, and an ISTE certified educator. She enjoys working with others to find ways for all students to succeed. She presents at the regional and national level, including Closing the Gap, ATIA, and ISTE on technologies that enable access and engagement for students.

Session description

Are you interested in learning more about how to use iOS devices to enhance accessibility? Do you love a good challenge? Join us for the first-ever iOS Accessibility Escape Room Challenge! Learn about 15+ accessibility features while solving puzzles and unlocking clues.

Purpose & objective

Participants will participate in a brief lecture-style learning experience and then break out as teams to learn about accessibility features of iPad and iPhones through hands-on, experiential learning and solve puzzles to save our ed-tech! Tools, including the built-in accessibility features of the personal iOS device, Google Forms, websites, and physical and digital locks, will be used to facilitate this session.

Objectives-

Participants will be able to locate and manage at least five accessibility features of iOS devices.

Participants will understand the value of using accessibility features to help students better access their educational environment.

Participants will be able to describe the use of at least three accessibility features.

Outline

-Introduction (3 minutes / lecture)
-Discussion of the use of accessibility features & set up (15 minutes / lecture & digital interaction)

-Escape Room play- Participants will work together to solve clues related to the accessibility features of iOS devices. Many of these clues will require participants to utilize the accessibility features to solve the clue. The session will come back intermittently to the full group to watch a video that reveals more information about accessibility features and guides participants through the escape room. (60 minutes / group activity)

-Debrief- participants will come back together to watch a wrap up of the escape, lean about any features they were not able to successfully solve, share out key take-aways, and discuss the potential use of these features in their practice. (10 minutes)

-Wrap Up- (2 minutes / Q&A)
