Ashley McBride, Ed.D., is a digital learning leader for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.She has experience as a secondary English teacher, instructional technology facilitator and director of technology. McBride has led districtwide professional learning and statewide initiatives that help promote the effective and safe integration of technology for administrators, educators and students. In addition to her work with the state of North Carolina, McBride serves on the board of the North Carolina Technology in Education Society (NCTIES) and is also a COSN Certified Educational Technology Leader. She holds a doctorate in educational technology from Central Michigan University where she researched technology-related professional learning and educational technology coaching. Her experiences in K-12 education and her research in the field informed her 2021 ISTE-published book, The Edtech Coaching Primer: Supporting Teachers in the Digital Age Classroom.

Marsha Sirkin has been an educator for 20 years. She is a proud alum of Appalachian State University and UNC-Wilmington. She is a Carteret County Digital Learning Coach and early childhood specialist who loves children & knows they can CHANGE THE WORLD FOR GOOD. She has served as a DPI- Digital Learning Ambassador, educating teachers across our state through the North Carolina Digital Learning Initiative. When she grows up, she wants to return to college to help future educators begin their awesome journey in the classroom and beyond.

Session description

Brain science has made major leaps in the last few years. Join us as we dig into the most recent and relevant neuroscience, and walk away with strategies that will help you engage every brain in your learning space, regardless of what age or content you teach.

Purpose & objective

Participants will:
Explore the most recent brain research that supports learning growth
Examine frameworks that help support learning growth
Engage with activities that can be used with students and utilize this brain research and supporting frameworks

We will be utilizing protocols for meaningful engagment that teachers can easily transfer to student experiences.
Our core presentation will be a slide deck with attendees adding input on chart paper with digital interactive opportunities including flip, jamboard, augemented reality, and virtual reality. Resources shared will be easily retreivable through a google site.

Success will be meausured by engagement and participation in the collaborative flip activity.

Outline

*Who is here? We will gather information on the audience so we can tailor the session to their needs (5 min)
*Discussion- We will pose a collaborative discussion prompt (Describe concerns you have seen arise with your students that did not exist or were not as prevalent with your students prior to Covid.) and use the think-square protocol for participants to discuss (10 min)
*Research- We will share the research supporting the negative effects of anger, depression, and anxiety on the brain as well as research supporting strategies to change these brain stages to increase executive functioning abilities. (15 min)
*Classroom Strategies- Using a flipgrid/station protocol, we will give strategies for ways to change brain states as well as supporting materials in the CASEL framework to inform the design of classroom practices. Participants will share takeaways with each station through Flip to create a collaborative culture of continuous learning. (20 mins)
*Reflection and sharing - Using the What, So what, now what protocol we will have participants reflect on their learning and share out how they intend to use that learning in their environment. (10 mins)
