I am in my 18th year as a K-4 Library/Technology teacher in Falmouth, MA. While I started my career as a Library teacher, I quickly embraced the importance of incorporating computer science and digital literacy in my curriculum. I am passionate about the importance of bringing CS to all students and enjoy facilitating workshops for classroom teachers through code.org and CSforMA. I am an active member of CSforMA, MassCUE and work with MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Digital Literacy and Computer Science Leadership Network.
Digital literacy and computer science teacher / head tech coordinator
Melissa Zeitz, PreK–8 Digital Literacy and Computer Science Teacher, has worked to support DLCS curricula in her school and across her district. Melissa is the technology and curriculum resource coordinator for the CSforALL Springfield NSF-funded grant which aims to write computer science curriculum to be integrated into the district’s academic curriculum. In these roles she has guided numerous teachers to different DLCS resources and curricula and advised the district in deciding what computer science resources may be beneficial for the elementary level. Melissa is the CSTA of Western Mass President and a MIEE Expert.
Session description
Flip is a tool that allows students to show their understanding and share their learning with others. We'll share numerous ways to use Flip as an assessment tool, while providing various ways for students to express their understanding.
Purpose & objective
The purpose of the workshop is to have attendees understand how they can use Flip to broaden how they approach assessments.
Participants will walk away understanding how to use Flip as a tool for assessment and will see examples of Flip being used in the classroom to assess numerous different content areas

Outline
5 minutes: Introduce who we are and poll the audience to see who’s in the room.
10 minutes: Sharing with participants ways we have used Flip in the classroom focusing on assessment while giving students a voice to express themselves however they feel comfortable.
10 minutes: Modeling different features on Flip and how they could be used for assessment purposes.
20 minutes: Participants will be given an activity and they will have to assess their understanding of that activity through the use of Flip.
5 minutes: Share out some of the videos and showcase a rubric that could be used while using Flip.
5 minutes: Answer any questions that people may have.
