Dr. Virginia Duncan has been an Associate Principal in the Arts & Communications Academy of Garden City High School since 2021. Prior to that, she was an Instructional Technology Coach for 10 years. Before coaching teachers full time, Ginny taught English, History, and Drama at the middle level. Ginny is most passionate about helping teachers through their individual professional journey and helping them become teacher leaders. Ginny works to transform professional learning by implementing flexible and personal PL models and strategies that change the way teachers learn and grow. She continues to refine PL plans with innovative ideas and environments.

Session description

Become empowered leaders by learning practical strategies to market professional learning and instructional initiatives. Motivate staff to voluntarily participate and implement learning outcomes. Recruit and sustain professional learning relationships through the use of marketing tools.

Purpose & objective

Presenter will share example marketing techniques; session attendees will gain examples, tools, ideas, and structures for promoting and developing professional learning and instructional initiatives. Presenter will share personal experiences of using marketing strategies to engage adult learners, including the promotion of ongoing, year-long leveled professional learning; novice teacher orientation structures; and PL “events.”

Outline

After a brief introduction (10 minutes), presenter will share adult learning theory and change theory (3 minute video).
Session attendees will evaluate the type of adults within their school (5 minutes).
Presenter will share different techniques for marketing to various types of adult learners to maximize participation and excite adult learners, incorporating various collaborative structures for session participants to exchange ideas and assist each other in problem-solving (30 minutes), followed by a reflective wrap-up and action step exit ticket (10 minutes).
