Bill Bass is the innovation coordinator for instructional technology, information, library media and federal programs in the Parkway School District in St. Louis, Missouri where he leads the district library and instructional technology programs and creates conditions to foster districtwide classroom innovation. As a speaker, writer and professional developer, he focuses on systemic and sustainable integration of technology into classrooms. He is a past president of the ISTE Board of Directors and is a frequent conference speaker and presenter. He has written numerous articles and book chapters, and is the author of three books.

She is also the Future Ready Librarians Spokesperson working with the Alliance of Excellent Education in Washington DC. Diana Rendina, MLIS, is the teacher librarian at Tampa Preparatory School, an independent 6-12 school. Previously, she was the media specialist at Stewart Middle Magnet School where she transformed their library and piloted their makerspace program. Diana has received several awards including the 2016 ISTE Outstanding Young Educator Award and the 2015 American Association of School Librarians Frances Henne award. Nikki is a veteran educator, school librarian, Google Certified Trainer, and the ISTE Librarians Network Past-President. Nikki is passionate about school libraries, educational technology, collaboration with other education professionals, and assisting students in becoming well-informed, critically thinking digital citizens. Nikki earned her Ph.D. in Integrating Technology, Learning, and Psychology in May 2023. Nikki is the recipient of several honors, including an ASLA Ann Marie Pipkin Technology Award and the AASL Bound to Stay Bound Grant, and was named the Program Pioneer Social Media Superstar by the American Association of School Librarians.

JULIA E. TORRES is a nationally recognized veteran language arts teacher, librarian, and teen programs administrator in Denver, Colorado. Julia facilitates teacher development workshops rooted in the areas of anti-racist education, equity and access in literacy and librarianship, and education as a practice of liberation. Julia's work has been featured on NPR, AlJazeera’s The Stream, PBS Education, KQED’s MindShift, Rethinking Schools, Learning for Justice Magazine, School Library Journal, American Libraries Magazine, and many more. Her co-authored title Liven Up Your Library: Design Engaging and Inclusive Programs for Teens and Tweens is just the first of many forthcoming publications for librarians and educators.

Session description

As society changes, so does the definition of literacy and what it means to be literate in the digital age. Join ISTE library authors as we explore the ways that technology is pushing us to examine our assumptions and approaches to the changing face of literacy.

Purpose & objective

- Participants will be inspired to be thought leaders in their own communities.
- Participants will understand the unknown nature of the state of education and receive some guidance as to how they might proceed in their own communities.
- Participants will connect with each other throughout the session around the changing face of literacy

Outline

5 minutes - welcome and panelist introduction
10 minutes - panelists will engage in conversation about how literacy should be defined in the digital age
5 minutes - participants will discuss in partners and share out their reactions to the panelists
10 minutes - the moderator will frame the topic and panelists will engage in a discussion around the the shifts that have occurred in their school districts to be relevant in the digital age
5 minutes - participants will have a questions and answer time with the panelists
15 minutes - panelists will share strategies that has pushed their libraries forward and caused them to think differently about literacy and reading
5 minutes - participants will have a questions and answer session with the panelists
5 minutes - panelists will provide last words and a call to action for participants
