Session description

Planning or revamping a makerspace requires a strategic approach with a clear mission and vision for the space in mind. This session will expose participants to guiding resources to help them develop a mission and vision for their makerspace as well as set goals for the development of their space.

Purpose & objective

The closure of schools and the inability to share materials safely during the pandemic led many schools to shutter their makerspaces. Now, as we enter a new phase of life in the post-pandemic world, we can begin to turn our attention back to makerspaces and to redesign and revamp them. This session will lead attendees through a strategic planning process to help them refocus their makerspace around a central mission and vision. This mission and vision will guide them in setting actionable goals, selecting resources, and making choices about the physical design of the space all for the purpose of fostering innovative learning, collaboration, and any other goals they desire for their makerspace to achieve. A poster will be used to help convey content during the presentation. Attendees will also receive a copy of the MakerSpace MakeOver strategic planner and a list of accompanying resources. Success will be evident in attendees' ability to develop a collaborative mission and vision for their makerspace.
