Janelle Clevenger McLaughlin, is an Education Consultant for Advanced Learning Partnerships working with districts all across the United States. She is a former curriculum director and classroom teacher. Ms. McLaughlin has a strong belief in the power of education and the role leaders play in building a strong foundation for the organization. In 2022, she released her first two books: Leadership at Every Level: Five Qualities of Effective Classroom, School, and District Leaders and Instruction Without Boundaries. Ms. McLaughlin’s greatest joys come from laughing with her two teens, Sydney and Evan.

Matthew Rhoads, Ed.D. is an expert and innovator in educational technology and instructional strategy integration within online, blended, and traditional in-person classroom settings. As a practicing educator and instructional leader in K-12, Adult Education, and higher education, he develops EdTech tool integrations with instructional strategies to drive instruction. Session description

We'll highlight challenges new teachers face as they enter the profession and share the effective strategies we used to support their success. You'll learn to approach teacher support using a variety of instructional strategies tailored to support the individual needs of the educators you're working with.

Purpose & objective

Participants will be able to learn about common struggles new teachers are currently facing and discover some strategies that are immediately actionable to help support educator success despite instructional environment.

Participants will be able to approach coaching through a lens of focus and concision based on effective research-based instructional approaches paired with varied educational technology tools.

Participants will be able to walk away with a coaching toolbox that includes effective research to guide their coaching conversations, experiences and examples of what quality coaching looks like, and methods for immediate feedback that guides their educators towards success.

Outline

Welcoming Routine: Inviting individuals to consider the background perspectives they bring to the experience and share together to find commonalities and differences

Evaluate Research surrounding current realities that exist in schools regarding teacher burnout, retention, and recruitment. Attendees will be able to participate in a Ziplet that will garner full participant perspective regarding the research presented.

Case study: Participants will be broken up into small groups and provided various case studies of coaching conversations over a variety of topics and individuals in groups will determine course of action and how to best approach situation. They will complete a templated slide deck that highlights the approach they would take and share out

Direct Instruction re: adult learning theory, coaching approaches, and feedback cycle (Using PearDeck for immediate insight and feedback)

Practice in small groups the skills and techniques highlighted in DI portion. Share together and share out.

Converse about methods of onboarding educators into the coaching cycle, educator development, and how to keep the conversation focused. Pair-share about personal experiences and share out. This portion will include effective edtech for tracking coaching conversations, goal setting, and progress.

Optimistic Closure: Consider the session. Use digital "IT STUCK" sticky note to identify something that resonated and that you will walk away with from the session
