Session description

Each year brings new staff members to our halls. As teacher shortages become prevalent in many states, teachers from nontraditional paths are joining our ranks. We will explore different methods for inducting new faculty and bounce ideas off of peers to lay the foundation for a program to take home.

Purpose & objective

Participants will leave with an outline and timeline for a new teacher induction program that fits their school or district.

Every year brings new teachers to our campuses. Current trends in education see more teachers leaving the profession and more new teachers joining us from non-traditional teacher preparation paths. It is more important than ever to have a robust, intensive teacher induction program. While many people are proficient in personal technology use, teaching with tech is another area of knowledge altogether. A key part of any teacher induction program should be the seamless integration of technology. Therefore, participants will use the slide building tool of their choice to create an outline and timeline for a teacher induction program that fits their unique needs as a school or district.

Instructional plan: We will begin with a quick poll to determine what participants currently have in place in the way of new teacher induction. Then, 10 minutes of direct instruction in which the presenter will highlight three different models of new teacher induction programs. Participants will then talk in small groups about challenges facing their districts/schools and how they can work proactively to prepare new teachers to solve these potential issues. Finally, participants will brainstorm a proposed outline and timeline for first year teachers in their district using a template provided through Google Slides.
