Deborah is an Associate Professor in the Counselor Education and Student Affairs Department at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. She is licensed in Pennsylvania as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and in Ohio as a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Deborah has held a variety of leadership positions in the counseling profession and worked in an array of clinical settings. Deborah has forged a research and scholarly agenda around the topics of neuroscience-informed counseling, using creativity in counseling, professional adjustment for counselors, counseling as a global profession, and social justice/advocacy for marginalized populations.

Roseanne Perkins holds a PhD in Teaching, Learning, and Technology from Lehigh University, an M.Ed in Art Education, and an MLS. She is an Associate Professor in the Elementary, Middle-Level, Library and Technologies Education Department at Kutztown University. Her research interests include makerspaces and interdisciplinary collaborations, and professional development for early literacy-based storytime providers.

Session description

Maker therapy is a creative approach to counseling that leverages the makerspace as a potentially rich environment for activities that support learners' mental health. We will offer practical ideas for how teachers and coaches might try to integrate maker therapy into their schools through collaborations with counselors.

Purpose & objective

Participants will be able to:
Articulate what maker therapy is.
Articulate the established therapy and practice that supports the use of maker therapy.
Describe activities that support mental health that can be completed in maker space setting.
Describe strategies for approaching school counselors and other key school personnel to develop a collaboration to facilitate using maker therapy in the maker space.

Outline

Introduction: (15 minutes)
Basic definitions for professionals outside the counseling and mental health fields.
A definition of Maker Therapy
Where Maker Therapy fits with similar approaches (play therapy, art therapy, etc.)
An overview of the existing theoretical and empirical support for using maker therapy approaches

Examples: (30 minutes)
High tech, Lo-Tech, and No-Tech examples of maker activities that can be used in counseling contexts such as:
Creating an LED paper circuit card to help a student describe a happy memory.
Using stop motion animation to tell a story related to the learner's feelings.
3D printing objects to represent important people in the learner's life.

Collaborative Strategies: (10 minutes)
Approaching the school counselor to develop a collaboration.
Anticipating common questions the counselor may have.
