Session description

Teachers strive to have self-directed students who can work both independently and as members of a community, in other words, holonomous students. In this session, we will explore the five states of mind that lead to holonomy and the tech tools that can help!

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce participants to the concept of holonomy and how people draw upon 5 States of Mind to perform at their best and achieve this idea of holonomy.

We will use the model for States of Mind from Cognitive Coaching: Developing Self-Directed Leaders and Learners by Arthur Costa and Robert Garmston.

As we define and explore these states of mind-- craftsmanship, efficacy, consciousness, flexibility, and interdependence-- participants will be able to assess which States of Mind in which a student may be low, and thus mediate these states of mind through different strategies and technology applications.

Participants will interact with and collaborate with the presenter on aligning different technology tools that can help illuminate and raise students’ States of Mind. This is a new way to consider differentiating for student needs and human uniqueness.

Participants will be able to intentionally offer students different technology options to build toward the goal of holonomy-- being able to work both independently and in a community.

Success will be evident in how participants align different technology tools and resources to differentiate based on States of Mind.
