Purpose & objective

By the end of our session, participants will be able to:

- Explain the value of using Google Data Studio to make critical student SEL information accessible for a myriad of stakeholders.

- Apply their understanding of Data Studio to manipulate SEL data and glean important student insights.

- Build a Google Data Studio framework from an existing Google spreadsheet and consider its application within their own context

- Reflect ,with their peers and presenters, upon the potential of Data Studio to make meaningful change in their education

Outline

Content and activities: Learners can expect to dive into how New Visions for Public is leveraging Google Data Studio to make student social and emotional learning data actionable for educators across our network. ISTE attendees will have an opportunity to explore our Social and Emotional Learning Screener in Data Studio and see how this tool frankly brings data to life. Attendees will have individual access to our Data Studio, and will be guided through a series of activities to help them experience the power of the tool.

Time: We will start with a brief overview our process and the CASEL research that informs the screener (15 mins), before diving right into the tool itself and giving opportunities for attendees to learn through interaction (30 mins). Finally, we will conclude by guiding attendees through our easy step by step process of building a Data Studio dashboard (15 mins).

Process: Participants will work with the person next to them to search through our Data Studio and experience how easy it is to find relevant social and emotional learning data. We will design a treasure hunt based activity to simultaneously demonstrate the tools functionality and help participants to understand the CASEL competencies.

Supporting research

https://casel.org/

New Visions for Public Schools extensively uses the CASEL framework to train our leaders, design Advisory structures, and develop shared meaning in relation to social and emotional learning. Additionally, the CASEL competencies are at the core of the SEL data being presented in this session. We will highlight how an understanding of these competencies coupled with a well constructed tool (eg Data Studio) can make it easier to understand a students' social and emotional wellbeing.
