Mason Scuderi is the President at d'Vinci Interactive and has expertise in digital resources, with special interest in online learning. He oversees day-to-day operations and leads the d'Vinci team as they produce award winning websites, learning experiences and educational apps. In collaboration with industry leaders, he leads development of e-learning experiences and educational websites for government, corporate, and K-12 educational markets. He brings over twenty-five years of experience in educational technology. Mason is a native of Maryland and an alumnus of Shepherd University.

Elizabeth Simon, PhD, PreK Program Specialist, has strong background in early child development and educational media/technology. Responsible for development and promotion of SAE International’s AWIM Preschool Exploration series and new K-12 STEM curriculum, she conducts educator outreach, training, and support. Prior, as Senior Research Associate at Goodman Research Group, Inc (GRG), a research company that evaluates educational programs, materials, and services, Elizabeth led evaluations of professional development, formal and informal STEM programs, multimedia educational packages, and public TV outreach initiatives. Elizabeth managed the longitudinal evaluation of AWIM beginning in 2004 and the AWIM Fuel Cell Challenge national field test.

Bonnie Thibodeau joined SAE International’s A World In Motion PreK-12 STEM program in 2017. She specializes in curriculum development and teacher training with a focus on literacy and education technology. She is passionate about creating equitable access to high-quality STEM resources for diverse & whole-child learners. Bonnie holds an MA and BA in English Literature. Her background in education includes working as a composition & rhetoric instructor at West Virginia University, writing tutor at Penn State, and science teaching assistant with elementary students. She volunteers with writing and digital storytelling projects for at-promise students and refugee communities.

Session description

Explore SAE International’s resources for integrating literature in PK-12 STEM for meaningful learning experiences in any environment — online or hands-on! We will provide examples of open-access content, tools and methods for blending language arts with foundational computer science concepts to spark all students’ curiosity, collaboration and creativity.

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn resources and methods for incorporating age-appropriate literature into computer science lessons independent of technology access. They will gain strategies for selecting content, facilitating discussions and drawing connections that excite student learning. They will compare print and digital books, collaborate in a CS-ELA activity and consider classroom applications.

Outline

- Learn strategies for pairing computer science curriculum and literature using examples from SAE's STEM resources (15 minutes)
- Examine the gamified comic book, STEM Sagas: Virtually Rerouted and learn about hybrid, multidisciplinary applications (10 minutes)
- Participate in two peer-to-peer discussions & activities from the Virtually Rerouted curriculum, bringing narrative and science concepts together with chances to win an SAE classroom kit! (30 minutes)
- Regroup to share takeaways and ideas for classroom applications (5 minutes)
- Content will be projected with optional access on personal devices; all participants will receive a complimentary printed copy of an SAE book
