Session description

This session is a discussion on project-based learning (PBL) centered around Google apps and featuring Google My Maps. We will explore using Google Docs, Forms, Sheets and Sites to gather information for a virtual road trip that will be mapped out using Google My Maps.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to introduce Google My Maps and integrate it into a Project Based Learning Activity. It can be used in multiple grade levels as well as inter-disciplinary as well.
Participants will understand the elements of a project based activity and be introduced to the features of Google My Maps.
Educators will be able to use the information to craft their own independent or cooperative activities to broaden their students awareness of their country while sharing a virtual travel experience.

Outline

Introduction to PBL ( approx 10 min)
Presenter(s) introduction and the concept of project-based and digital story-telling with maps. Discussion will include how this activity aligns with not just ISTE Standards but other common standard formats.

Components of Virtual Road Trip PBL (approx 10 min)
Show a completed assignment and group project based on the collaborative input of students' stories. This will include the assignment, student resources, student project, and rubric.

Google My Maps ( approx 20 min)
Introduction to My Maps and examples of how students can use this tool in a project based activity.

Other Voice and Choice Options (approx 10 min)
Additional options including Slides, Sites to allow students voice and chioce for their presentation.

Interact with participants in a game based activity using Lumio (Smart Learning Suite Online)
Wrap up Q&A using Shout it Out activity in Lumio.
