Participants will leave with a toolkit to get their students starting with sketchnoting. In addition, participants will leave with tips, tools and ideas for curating student sketchnotes so they can be catalysts for assessment, future instruction, spiral review, academic conversations and more. In-person attendees will be given the opportunity to take the role of the student and practice the basics of sketchnoting and making thinking visual. Attendees will be guided through the process through numerous student examples curated on the Cardinal Innovation Center Sketchnotes Gallery website.
Participants will be walked through the following strategies that will help educators avoid the copier and improve engagement by employing sketchnotes in a variety of ways.
- Why Sketchnotes? Discuss how sketchnoting is great for all learners and learning modalities. (5 min)
- What can you sketchnote? Discuss the various learning experiences where sketchnotes can enhance learning. (5 min)
- Sylvia Duckworth: Share resources by Sketchnoting author and guru Sylvia Duckworth. (5 min)
Lesson Design Example: Share the story of teacher Dana Jobe, whom I coached, who incorporated sketchnotes in a science lesson that enhanced academic conversations using Screencastify. (5 min)
- Student Samples: Be walked through authentic student examples of sketchnotes in a variety of subjects (5 min)
- When can you sketchnote? Discuss times and opportunities in the lesson design and teaching process when sketchnoting can enhance learning. (5 min)
- Starter Kit: Share simple tips for getting started with sketchnoting in the classroom, in-person or virtual (5 min)
- Practice: Engage in a short sample lesson and employ sketchnoting strategies (15 min)
