Session description

Using the post-COVID universal adoption of collaboration and communication systems in schools, we'll explore different ways of creating collaborative learning opportunities that prepare learners for the future of the world of work, which will require the ability to navigate cross-cultural, international online teams.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the presentation is to share with teachers, and other stakeholders, various methods of creating successful global collaboration experiences. Since 2020, we have designed and implemented ten collaboration experiences with three schools in the United States – we are a school based in South Africa. Our programme has been successful and received positive feedback from our own community and pupils and teachers in the other schools.
I would like to share the various learning designs we have used, the successes and failures of each, and a guideline as to how to approach the design of global collaborative learning.
I intend to provide examples of the learning design model we have used for use by other teachers.
The presentation will touch on the use of MS Teams, Google Meet & Zoom as possible communication and collaboration tools.

Outline

As a virtual presentation, I intend to start the presentation in the format of some of our successful global collaboration lessons.
First component (10min):
This first section is aimed at engaging the audience early and exposing them immediately to some of the challenges and possibilities of global collaboration.
• Provide a brief introduction
• Ask all participants to complete a live poll and share the results
• Send the participants into breakout rooms with a specific question to answer
• Repeat the poll and answer another poll regarding the interaction experience
• Provide a brief analysis on this short activity and the possible benefits and challenges.
Second Component (10-15min):
Following that I will present on some of the different formats of projects and present a short model to help classify projects that will assist with deciding on learning design. I will use specific examples from our projects to illustrate different designs and aspects, such as project depth, and to discuss successes and challenges.
Third component (5min):
I would like to end the presentation by using polls to gauge what the audience has already done and explore how to go about establishing connections.
