Maria Steffero is a Supervisor of Mathematics and Science at Colts Neck High School in the Freehold Regional High School District, where she engages in strategic planning to advance equity and access. She has presented at the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics on an intervention model for professional development as well as on standards-aligned instruction and cross-curricular integration for the Association for Mathematics Teachers of NJ. Her research at the Graduate School of Education of Rutgers University traced the construction of conceptual knowledge in collaborative learning environments where personally relevant problems were shared, questioned, and argued.

Session description

In this interactive session, get hands-on exposure to cross-curricular technologies like Flip, Immersive Reader and Google Translate that can enhance the assessment of English language learners to scaffold targeted instruction. Come away with knowledge of best practices as well as practical strategies and resources to aid your implementation.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this interactive session is to connect attendees with the tools, knowledge, and strategies necessary to support ELL students both in and outside of the classroom. Participants will be able to engage in technology-driven learning activities curated from a wide range of subject areas including, but not limited to art, English, ESL, history mathematics, music, science, and world languages. This session will include an introduction to the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model, and will discuss the benefits of empowering ELL students to leverage technologies to communicate complex ideas with others. By participating in this session, the attendee will:

-Preview the eight interrelated components of the SIOP model and how educational technologies can be used to facilitate each component
-Explore features of commonly used educational technologies such as Flip and Google Docs to better support ELL students
-Gather assessment ideas through exposure to cross curricular teacher creations
-Learn how to support students in navigating and utilizing these digital tools to transform their learning and enhance their communication skills
-Gain access to resources and tutorials for ELL supportive technologies that they can utilize to turnkey this experience within their schools

Evidence of success will be determined as the participants share their takeaways for utilizing educational technologies to assess ELLs and inform instruction. Moreover, success will be measured by the implementation ideas that participants share with their fellow attendees and global communities.

Outline

The presentation will include the following components:

1. Overview of ELL Supportive Technologies (5 minutes): We will begin by previewing the eight components of the SIOP model as well as the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework. We will then offer a brief discussion of current theories of ELL pedagogy in order to provide a theoretical framework to inform practices within the classroom and inspire teachers to embrace the use of educational technologies as tools for empowering English language learners both in and outside of the classroom. Further, we will review research such as Torres’ (2022) work on the gains that ELLs experience as a result of technology-based instruction. During this time, we will distribute an extensive annotated bibliography of ELL resources and supportive technologies that we use to support students in our sheltered classes.

2. Virtual Gallery Walk (10 minutes): During this portion of the presentation, attendees will use their devices to engage in an interactive gallery walk where they will explore teacher designed artifacts from a wide range of subject areas including mathematics, history, language arts, science, and world languages. In addition, they will gain exposure to a wide range of educational technologies that can be used to support English language learners across the curriculum such as Flip, Immersive Reader, Read&Write, Google Translate, Microsoft Translate, Quizlet, and Actively Learn. In doing so, participants will gather formative and summative assessment ideas through their interaction with the curated artifacts featured. During the gallery walk, attendees will be able to preview the creation stations that they will be using later in the session.

3. Interactive Attendee Design of ELL Assessment Resources (30 minutes): Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in the creation of technology-enhanced ELL assessments that fit their curriculum and diverse student needs and interests. During this time, they will have hands-on experience with the educational technologies reviewed and will be able to work on their respective projects with the assistance of the presenters. Presenters will provide tutorials on how to use each platform and have subject-specific supports available as well. This portion of the presentation will embrace the structure of a makerspace and therefore attendees will have the opportunity to explore their own interests and become innovative designers with the support and coaching of the presenters.

4. Virtual Sharing and Exploration of Learning Artifacts (10 minutes): After designing a technology-enhanced ELL resource of their choosing, each participant will generate a share link or QR code to share out their learning artifacts. Session participants will have an opportunity to explore one another’s final products and network with one another.

5. Roundtable Question and Answer (5 minutes): We will provide time at the end of our presentation for a roundtable question and answer session where participants can engage in peer-to-peer interaction to discuss how they can enhance ELL student learning through the use of educational technology in their respective classrooms and embrace the principles and pedagogy discussed in a manner that suits their curriculum as well as students’ interests and needs. During this time, attendees will receive digital resources that include technology tutorials and subject-specific instructional assessments that they can adapt for use within their schools.
