My name is Caty Carmendy, and I am the Instructional Coach of Mooresville High School. I have previously been a beginning teacher of the year for both my school and my entire district. My teaching background is in high school math, but I now work with all core and elective subjects. I also have an extensive amount of experience as a technology liaison with other school districts to help with 1:1 or other technology initiatives as well as presenting PD at conferences not limited to but including NCTIES and ISTE.

Session description

Come explore what an active learning environment is and learn how the SEL Playbook Strategies can create these spaces in your classroom!

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the session is to provide teachers or school admin/coaches researched based SEL classroom strategies that specifically target or help promote an Active Learning Environment

These strategies are meant to
*Increase collaboration
*Provide structure to the collaboration
*Create an active learning environment
*Deepen Content Mastery

Outline

Hook: Examples and NonExamples of Active Learning Environments (5-10 minutes)

Intro: Participants will activate prior knowledge of Active Learning Environments using a digital version of one of the SEL strategies (10-15 minutes)

Participants will explore specific strategies from the SEL Playbook using a notetaker and modeling activities where applicable (20 - 25 minutes)

Participants will engage in a standards connection exercise where we will connect our content to the SEL standards (5-10 minutes)

Participants will end by doing an exit ticket where they use a "Suits" protocol to share key takeaways (5-10 minutes)
