Emma Hernandez is the Chief Executive Officer of the Southeast Community Development Corporation. Prior to that she was the Chief Operating Officer beginning 2017. During her time as CEO, Emma shifted SCDC’s program curriculum so that it includes advanced STEM programming for students from 2nd to 12th grade and brought greatly needed resources; such as tutoring for school-age children, free Chromebook, and free hotspots. As CEO, Emma is dedicated to ensure that SCDC’s mission drives every program so that the Southeast Los Angeles residents are healthy, educated and productive individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow.

Session description

In order to close the digital divide, our students need opportunities to practice the STEM skills we teach. During this session, we'll share strategies used to build capacity by leveraging resources among nonprofits, schools and cities in an urban area of Los Angeles.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the session is to provide educational leaders with a framework that may be used to create collaboration between cities, community-based organizations, and schools.

Participants will gain an understanding of how to engage cities, schools, and community-based organizations.

Participants will learn about funding sources and in-kind resources.

Participants will learn of barriers and lessons learned from this 13-year-long project.
