Session description

Data is everywhere numbers and information are collected, analyzed and used to determine what ads pop-up in Facebook. Data literacy is critical. Knowing how to read and write with data will help as you work with students. This interactive session will explore data conversations, real life examples and more.

Purpose & objective

“Data literacy is the ability to collect, manage, evaluate, and apply data, in a critical manner” [From Strategies and Best Practices for Data Literacy Education Knowledge Synthesis Report by Chantel Ridsdale et al at Dalhousie University] Data literacy has become a critical need for today's learners. Being able to understand, share and evaluate data contributes to workforce ready learners.

This session will look at data literacy and what it entails. We'll then explore what resources are available, including research, data projects and data lessons provided through large data aggregators.
We'll then look at ways to evaluate and display data.

At the close of this session, attendees will be able to:

Recognize the role that data plays in today's world

Identify the skills necessary to read and write effectively with data

Discuss the implications of data literacy among multiple perspectives like data privacy, personal data management and Big Data
