Leticia Citizen, a 23-year educator, is a Samsung Education Coach interested in technology-enhanced teaching and global connections. As a result, she implements many applications available to teachers to help augment their students’ learning, modernizing traditional classroom methods. Leticia dedicates her life to social justice, teaching through an equity lens, and providing intentional and engaging PD. She is a co-founder of Equity In Action CA and Tech.Teach.Grow, LLC. Leticia is an ambassador and trainer for various digital tools including Nearpod, Wakelet, Newsela, and Flipgrid. She’s Google Certified and an MIE Expert.

Session description

How can we create a positive classroom digital culture that supports academic learning with social-emotional well-being? Experience examples to foster a positive digital culture in the classroom by teaching digital citizenship through Nearpod. Leave with digcit tools to use in your classroom to nurture a strong positive digital culture.

Purpose & objective

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• engage students to Identify technology trends that are impacting their social and emotional well-being
• Reflect on how they can align existing SEL and digital citizenship initiatives in their classroom to build a positive digital culture
• Implement pedagogical strategies that promote student agency and wellbeing, including real-life scenarios, student personal examples, and interact online with classroom and global peers to build empathy with others
• peruse and select ready-made lessons and activities to build a positive digital culture.

Open Activities (10 mins)
- Join Nearpod Session
- Share on Open-Ended Slide "How Practiced Media Balance Previous Week?"
- On Collaborative Slide, share who's in the space

Purpose & Pedagogical Strategies (15 mins)
- Participants share how they are currently implementing digital citizenship to build a positive classroom culture
- Discuss the "Why"
- Share and Discuss how a positive digital culture is build using Common Sense lessons and Nearpod

Examples of Activities & Student Artifacts (15 mins)
- Share Activities connected to 4 Sections: Human Check-Ins, Digital Citizenship Check-Ins, Discussion, and Reflection
- Experience Student Activities by completing a Draw-It Slide, A Time To Climb, Collaborative Slide, and Flip
