Session description

Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. There's no better resource to have students learn all four of these valuable skills than Google Earth and Voyager Stories! Join us to learn how to build digital literacy skills with these tools.

Purpose & objective

The entire focus of this presentation will be on how we can work with students to understand the importance of knowing how to find, evaluate, create and communicate information. We will use Google Earth Voyager stories and the Google Earth Project creation tools to achieve this task. The objectives for this presentation are that participants will leave with a completed classroom project as well as an understanding of how they can use Google Earth as a teaching tool to allow students voice and choice in their learning. As a result of attending this session, participants will understand that Google Earth is a tool that can be used in the classroom to address the four major components of digital literacy-not just a place to consume content, but also to create and collaborate on their learning.

Outline

This session will begin with a very detailed overview of the web-based version of Google Earth. We will look at all options available to us in Earth to use as teaching tools. One of the most important aspects in this part of the session will be the time spent on exploring Google Earth Voyager stories. Time will be given to participants to look for stories that would impact the students in their own teaching situations. We will save the project creation tool as a final learning resource, where participants will create their own story to share with students.
Our session will wrap up with a share out on ideas that they can take back to their classrooms in order to give students a place to find, evaluate, create and communicate information. We will also discuss accessibility options in Google Earth in order for students to have a more personalized experience.
It's possible that the final project creation will be done with a partner, but options will be given so that Learners can determine their own path to creation.
