ISTE
Laurie Forcier’s interests lie in changing education systems so they better support the students, educators and leaders within them. She currently leads International Partnerships for ISTE, and has been Chief of Staff to EDUCATE Ventures Research, an AIEd start-up helping all parts of the EdTech ecosystem use data and evidence more wisely. She was previously chief content officer for Learnit, director of thought leadership for Pearson, and a senior aide to the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a frequent speaker on AI in Education, evidence in EdTech, and the future of education and skills.

Kids Read Now summer reading program serves hundreds of thousands and is proven to improve reading scores by 2-4 months over the summer. and Captionson.org is driving people to make screen time reading time promoting subtitles use.

Mr. Lurie holds 8 patents in communications and logistics systems, MBA from the University of Hartford.

Henry is a multi-award winning innovation expert and entrepreneur specialising in Education Technology. He is the co-founder & Chairman of the African education company Watobe and sits on the boards of several other charities and companies – almost always around education and technology.
He’s the former Director of Innovation for Pearson plc and the former Head of Innovation for GEMS as well as an advisor to His Highness The Aga Khan’s schools. Prior to that, he founded the school’s network Rafiki and the charity Gemin-i.
Session description
Launched in April 2020, Turn on the Subtitles is now the world’s biggest literacy project, having helped over 300 million children to learn to read. Laurie Forcier, ISTE's international partnerships lead, will interview TOTS founder Henry Warren to learn more about the research behind the campaign, the action he wants media outlets to take, and how teachers can take action in their own schools and communities.
Purpose & objective
Attendees will learn about the research behind the Turn on the Subtitles campaign, and how they can help advocate for changes by traditional and on-demand broadcasters to make subtitles the default setting for programs designed for children of early reading age (6-10 years).
