Bill Bass is the innovation coordinator for instructional technology, information, library media and federal programs in the Parkway School District in St. Louis, Missouri where he leads the district library and instructional technology programs and creates conditions to foster districtwide classroom innovation. As a speaker, writer and professional developer, he focuses on systemic and sustainable integration of technology into classrooms. He is a past president of the ISTE Board of Directors and is a frequent conference speaker and presenter. He has written numerous articles and book chapters, and is the author of three books.

Khonn Hazell-Fleming has worked in education for over two decades. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the University of the District of Columbia, as well as a Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning with Emerging Technologies from the University of the West Indies Open Campus. She is enthusiastic about using technology to teach and build digitally savvy independent learners, and she is passionate about integrating new technologies into the classroom. She considers it vital to share her experiences with colleagues in order to increase their grasp of unique opportunities in teaching and learning using technology.

Wenonah Lawrence is an educator on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, where she serves as the Curriculum Officer – Information and Communication Technology. Over the years, she has been able to serve in many roles including as a classroom teacher, school sports representative, science coordinator, numeracy coordinator, and professional development facilitator. As an educational technologist, she has been able to transform her professional practices, positively impacting learners, educators, and other community members. Mrs. Lawrence continually pursues learning opportunities and has committed her life to serving others by supporting them in their quests to achieve professional and personal goals.

Session description

This session will explore an international partnership between public schools in Anguilla and a nonprofit in the US that is creating meaningful learning opportunities for students, staff and families.

Purpose & objective

- Participants will experience the ISTE Standards in action in the context of an international project.
- Participants will understand the cultural differences that may impact a project focusing on access to devices, internet, and experiences in an international context.
- Participants will be inspired to make connections outside their own communities through private and public partnerships meant to empower students and educators.

Outline

Presenters will address the following items based on format and time.
- Presenters will share about the island of Anguilla and the educational system realities including the devastation of Hurricane Irma and the impact it has had on student learning
- Presenters will introduce Project Inspire, a part of The Anguilla Initiative, and explore how the project and nonprofit came to be
- Participants will explore an overview of the professional learning plan and content provided to teachers through Project Inspire and hear testimonials from teachers who are taking part in the project
- Participants will have a questions and answer session with the presenters
- Presenters will share the evaluation methodology and results used to measure impact of the project
- Presenters will share next steps and the plan for expanding the project to meet the needs of all students on the island
- Presenters will provide last words and a call to action for participants on how to connect with organizations to make change in communities in need
