Laura McLaughlin is a professor of education, director of graduate education, and author. Laura has over 20 years of experience working with adult learners providing training, professional development and coaching in corporate and educational settings. Laura’s research focuses on developing learners in innovation, creativity and using technology to engage learners. Laura has co-published several books and publications related to educational technology and online learning including Nurturing Young Innovators (ISTE), A Quick Reference Guide on Increasing Engagement in Online Learning (ASCD), Teaching the 4Cs with Technology (ASCD), and Engaging Virtual Environments (Stylus).

Dr. Stephanie Smith Budhai is a teacher educator, expert in online learning and educational technology, past ISTE Awardee for Excellence in Teacher Education, and a Tech & Learning content contributor. Dr. Smith Budhai has co-published several books including Leveraging Digital Tools to Assess Student Learning (Routledge), Culturally Responsive Teaching Online and in Person (Corwin), and Best Practices in Engaging and Online Learning through Active and Experiential Learning Strategies (Routledge). She holds a PhD in Learning Technologies and K-12 technology certifications in Instructional Technology, Technology Education, and Computers and Information Technology.

Session description

In this interactive session, we explore systematic ways to encourage learners to be creative risk takers, innovative thinkers, and support them in developing entrepreneurial skills and dispositions. Building students’ digital fluency and potential opportunities for family engagement will also be discussed.

Purpose & objective

The presentation on "Nurturing Young Innovators: Fostering Design-thinking through an Entrepreneurial Mindset" aims to inspire educators and education professionals to cultivate an environment that nurtures the innovative and entrepreneurial potential of young learners. Educators will:
1. Explore the benefits of integrating design-thinking into educational practices.
2. Illustrate how an entrepreneurial mindset fosters creativity, resilience, adaptability, and a growth mindset.
3. Provide practical strategies and tips for integrating design-thinking principles into classroom activities and projects.
4. Discuss strategies for assessing and providing feedback on students' design-thinking projects and entrepreneurial endeavors.
