Nate McClennen is Vice-President of Strategy and Innovation at Getting Smart. At Getting Smart, Nate supports schools, districts, organizations, foundations, and universities to determine a strategic path forward based on the future of learning. His expertise and interests focus on expanded learning ecosystems, learning networks, technology-enabled personalized learning, project-based learning, real-world learning, purpose making, rural communities, equity, and place-based education. Nate has built two ed-tech solutions, helped found and lead a PK-12 school, taught math/science at multiple levels, supported multiple school launches, consulted nationally and internationally, and launched a rural-school network over his 25 year career.

Session description

Join Nate McClennen, co-author of the Power of Place: Authentic Learning Through Place-based Education, as he provides a framework for pedagogy around place and numerous examples of how technology can increase the quality of inquiry and the impact of learning experiences contextualized by community.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate to educators the power of technology in understanding and positively impacting local communities and places. The presentation objectives are:
1. Demonstrate how technologies such as mapping tools, digital storytelling platforms, data visualization tools, and virtual reality experiences can enhance students' knowledge and connection with their community.
2. Emphasize the importance of fostering empathy and a sense of place through technology.
3. Explore the use of data analysis tools and techniques to understand community issues and make informed decisions for positive impact.
