Future Forward
Over the past year, educators, schools, districts – the world – have survived in a state of ambiguity. As a leader, how do you plan for the future in an environment that’s constantly shifting and is influenced by factors like technology, economics, racial justice, politics, social movements and health. Join us to think boldly about what’s possible and bring imagination, critical thinking and empathy to learn at the intersection of futures thinking and design thinking. You may not be able to visit the future, but with the right tools, you can start to shape it.
Lightning Talk: Creating A New Culture Of Learning
How often are key decisions made based upon data? Habitual patterns? Influence of cliched jargon? Expanding on these questions how many learner experiences truly changed in a positive way as a result of these decisions. Perhaps it’s time for us to really examine many of our habits of mind and cultural norms and look at what the assets truly are and purge what leads to the predictability of learner outcomes/experiences. This brief talk will ideally serve as a catalyst for us to begin looking at the culture of our learning environments and seek ways to ensure more truly equitable experiences for all.

Interactive Workshop: New Literacies for Leaders
The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the way we live, work and connect, reminding us that the decisions we make now as school system leaders will have a long-lasting effect. These moments remind us that we need to move beyond feeling prepared for the future, and instead be sure we’re equipped to shape the futures of our communities. This means acting and thinking like futurists who leverage long-term thinking, contextual intelligence and multiple perspectives to envision, prototype and build toward possible and preferable futures.

Matt Barfield graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Elementary Education and worked nine years in a rural district in NC. After finding a love of working with teachers in his district, Matt ventured outside of his school district and began to work in the professional development field across the Carolinas. For eleven years, Matt has been working with Promethean, Inc. to help teachers integrate instructional technology in the classroom. Matt is a father, a husband, a teacher, an instructional technology integrator, an Apple Distinguished Educator, and a professional development guru for Promethean, Inc.
Rabinder (Rob) Mangewala is the assistant superintendent of business services for the Napa Valley Unified School District in California. An educator for over 20 years, he’s held roles as a teacher, director of assessment and director of technology. Laura McBain is a human-centered designer and educator, and the co-director of the K12 lab at the Stanford d.school. Her work focuses on understanding the ecosystem of education and finding meaningful opportunities to advance racial and social justice. Prior to her role at the d.school, McBain worked for 15 years at High Tech High, serving as the director of external relations, principal of two school sites and a founding teacher.
Lisa Kay Solomon is the designer in residence at Stanford d.school and a bestselling author and educator. At Stanford d.school, she focuses on bridging the disciplines of the future and design thinking. She teaches classes such as Inventing the Future, creates experiences like “Vote by Design” and “The Future’s Happening,” and works closely with the K-12 community to make futures thinking a mainstay of 21st century core curriculum.
