A core part of myschool library program is focusing on STEAM. This focus allows me to integrate literature with science, technology, engineering, art, and math into a seamless learning experience for the faculty, staff, and students. As time went on, I decided to add another component to mylibrary program - SEL (social-emotional learning). Students need art to express themselves and forget their worries about the stress of their school and home lives. Our students in the area have faced a myriad of roadblocks recently. Some of our families have lost their jobs and a reliable source of income due to the long-lasting economic impact of Covid-19.
Furthermore, some of my students told me that some of their closest family members passed away due to health complications. As our students persevered, they faced another roadblock - the aftermath of the Texas Winter Storm, Uri, in February 2021. Many of our students had damage in their homes, and some were displaced. This is why I now hold dear to my heart the power of SEL. I did bits and pieces throughout my years in education, but more so than ever, ensuring that all students are emotionally well-adjusted and ready to tackle life’s challenges is one of the top priorities. Participants will be exposed to updated activities and resources in this presentation.
1. Discussing what the connection between SEL & literature is (5 min)
2. Dissecting a sample SEL lesson (10 min)
3. Examining the next steps forward, including how to work with a limited budget (5 min)
Books offer a way for students to discuss the core strategies of SEL in an easily digestible format; strategies are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. In addition to developing gross and fine motor skills, art is a way for the students to express their understanding of complex, multilayered topics, including topics related to SEL, in a format most accessible to them. I did not need complex resources to create lessons. Any book can be used! Educators can frame questions from the character’s perspective, whether in a picture book or a chapter book.
