Lauren is an instructional technology coordinator for Chippewa Valley Schools in Metro Detroit, Michigan. She had supported technology integration for 9 years in the classroom before gaining the opportunity to support others in their own learning spaces, whether in person, online or in between. Her passion for all things educational technology has led her to new opportunities to inspire and support the next generation of digital citizens. She has taught many professional development sessions on AT and AEM. She has also created documentation to help students and teachers navigate AT resources that are available to them.

Vanessa VanDerPloeg is a certified teacher with a Masters in Educational Leadership and is currently employed as an Instructional Technology Specialist, better known as a Technology Coach, at Perry Township Schools in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is in her second year working with the district’s AEMing for Achievement Grant team through PATINS focusing on Accessible Educational Materials and Assistive Technology. She has taught many professional development sessions on AEM and AT in addition to sessions focused on accessibility through the lens of the WIDA domains.

Session description

Three technology coaches will share insights from their experiences in partnering with special education staff, ELL staff and classroom teachers to implement systems for Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Favorite accessibility tools will be highlighted and solutions will be shared as a model for other teams.

Purpose & objective

Describe how today's educational technology provides new opportunities for supporting all students through UDL (1:1 devices, free browser extensions/apps for devices, built in features in hardware, OSs and programs)

Explain the importance of having a team approach with defined systems for dealing with AT/AEM

Identify Strategic Partners within your organization that will assist you in sharing and supporting AEM/AT

Categorize relevant and irrelevant resources for assistive tech usage that can provide/support within your organization

Construct next steps for sharing the availability of AEM/AT in your organization
