Teacher
Redlands Unified School District
@ms.center_math
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Azusa Pacific University and a Masters of Science in Education in Instructional Technology from Fort Hays State University. I teach 7th grade mathematics, C-STEM, yearbook, and broadcasting. I was awarded C-STEM Teacher of the Year in 2022. I am currently in my 25th year of teaching middle school math and became a C-STEM teacher in 2019.

5th Grade Teacher/adjunct college profes
Kimberly Elementary School/Crafton Hills
I teach 5th grade and use coding and robotics to teach California State Math Standards through the CSTEM Roboblockly Curriculum in lieu of a traditional textbook. I am also an adjunct professor at Crafton Hills College as a computer and technology instructor. I use a Rapomook Digital Story Telling Machine in my classroom that allows students to write, act and broadcast their own movies. This year our movie, "Mission to Mars" was featured at the local theater in Redlands! I was awarded the Redlands Unified School District "Teacher of the Year" in 2002.

@deepikasri
Deepika Srivastava. is the STEAM & Innovation Coordinator at Redlands USD, California. She has worked with various computer science advocacy groups to increase access to computer science curriculum for all K-12 students. In 2020, she received the C-STEM Administrator of the Year, is the recipient of ISTE certificate for Artificial Intelligence Explorations in 2021 and 2023 NCWIT Aspiration in Computing Educator of the Year Award.. She has a Master of Science degree in Physics, Computer Applications and Educational Administration, a Teaching Credential in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Introductory Science, Computer science and over 16 years of professional experience in the United States and India.

Session description

Come learn how Redlands Unified is integrating coding and robotics in math classrooms using C-STEM curriculum to foster computational thinking and innovative design skills. Leave this presentation inspired to transform 21st-century learners into innovators by giving them the opportunity to think critically, problem-solve, design and innovate using computer science.

Purpose & objective

The participants will be able to
Understand how Redlands Unified addressed the unique learning needs of ALL students by providing hands-on coding based learning experiences in math through integrated coding and robotics
Understand how CSTEM curriculum was used to foster computational and innovative design skills of students using coding and robotics
Solve a math problem using coding and robotics using CSTEM curriculum
Create an innovative design project by integration of Math, Computer Science and Art
Learn about the pre-built activities in RoboBlocky platform aligned to Common Core Math standards, Computer Science Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards
Learn how Redlands Unified broadened the participation of traditionally underrepresented students such as students with disabilities, students of color, English Language Learners, and/or students of low socioeconomic status (SES) in computer science and STEM.
Leave the session encouraged and empowered to integrating coding and robotics across curriculum using CSTEM in their school or district.

CSTEM program implementation in Redlands Unified is based on the premise that every student should have an opportunity to learn computer science regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic background. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 85% of all jobs require expertise in college-level STEM courses, while only 17% of high school graduates in the United States are proficient in math and science. According to a Google/Gallup survey, fewer than half of schools offer high-quality computer science, and according to the College Board in 2016, only 27% of students taking AP Computer Science in California are young women and only 15% are under-represented minorities. But our need for computing professionals is rapidly growing. The implementation is ambitiously hopeful that they can make a significant contribution to fill this gap between demand and supply in the STEM fields.

RUSD’s relentless pursuit to offer a student centric Math Program system wide that is grounded in academic standards, while creating opportunities for students to be innovative design resulted in the following outcomes
Accelerated academic recovery in math: Students in C-STEM classrooms are performing 10% higher than students in regular math classrooms and some students are performing as well as students in the honors classrooms.
Increased representation of traditionally underrepresented subgroups: Participation of girls, students with low socioeconomic status, and students of color has increased considerably over the past 4 years.
Awards & Recognition: RUSD educators won the C-STEM Educator, Administrator and Superintendent of the Year awards for 2019, 2020 and 2021. RUSD students, teachers and administrators presented their learning and shared best practices at various county, state and national conferences.
Redlands is in its fifth year of implementation with CSTEM and is already exceeding the original expectations. Enrollment is increasing and student success indicators suggest the model has a strong foundation that would continue to close the opportunity and achievement gaps.

Outline

Participants will be guided through hands-on coding and robotics activities that are aligned to Math and Computer Science Standards. This session will explore how C-STEM Roboblockly, (a free web-based drag-and-drop coding environment for programming virtual and physical robot) can be integrated across curriculum to enhance the learning experiences of K-12 students. C-STEM is a UC Approved Educational Preparation Program for Undergraduate Admission for both K-12 and Community College students for all UC campuses. Integrating coding and robotics into math education facilitates an engaging, rigorous course that promotes critical thinking and creative problem solving. Coding fosters problem solving and critical thinking skills that are imperative for a student to be successful in math.

The adult presenter will open the session with introductions and make a case for the importance of integrating coding and robotics across curriculum. (2 minutes)
The adult presenter will introduce the Roboblockly coding platform of the UC Davis C-STEM program. (3 minutes) https://roboblocky.com/
The adult presenter will go over the coding blocks, in particular the math blocks, variables, loops, functions and images. (5 minutes) https://roboblocky.com/tutorials
The adult presenter will share K-12 C-STEM pre-built activities in RoboBlockly platform aligned to Common Core,and SC Standards. Include specific examples of activities on place value, fractions, discounts, linear function, exponential function and quadratic functions. (10 minutes) https://c-stem.ucdavis.edu/curriculum/
Student presenters will lead the participant using coding and robotics in creating a Elementary, and middle school Math project(15 minutes each, interactive learning; device based) https://roboblocky.com/curriculum/math/mathematics4/21.php
Student presenter will share how C-STEM program integrates Art into STEAM education through activity resources for music, drawing and animating with coding to play melodies, learning math with a piano, and generating a gallery of graphics ( 5 minute)
The adult presenter will take questions from participants ( 5 minutes)
