Laurie Guyon is Coordinator for Model Schools at WSWHE BOCES. She is the Capital Region Director and a trainer for NYSCATE. Laurie won the ‘Best Overall Implementation of Technology’ award from Tech and Learning and Global Impactor Award from the Digital Citizenship Institute in 2022. Laurie was named CoSN’s NextGen: Emerging EdTech Leaders in 2020 and earned the Spotlight Award at BOCES. Laurie was part of the NYSED authoring committee for the Computer Science and Digital Fluency standards and is a member of the NYSED Content Advisory Panel for those standards. She is an ISTE Certified Educator/Trainer and Google Certified Educator/Trainer.Laurie Guyon is Coordinator for Model Schools at WSWHE BOCES in NY. Session description

Do you have cybersecurity skills? On this mission, you will explore ethical hacking, learn cybersecurity strategies, and practice your response to potential attacks! Learn about hosting your own cybersecurity takeover event. You will get all of the resources you need to bring this event to your school.

Purpose & objective

Participants will receive all the resources necessary to host an event or do the activities in any classroom. They will see how to use EdTech tools such as Google Slides, Sphero, MAD-Learn and more to engage students and help them understand the topics surrounding cybersecurity including ethical hacking, cyberbullying, and password protection. The session will include hands on activities done through a jigsaw so that more topics can be covered in the time allotted. Time for discussions will allow for any questions to be answered and discussed.

Outline

Outline:
5 Min - Introduce topic and why it is important for educators. Intro presenter and background in the topic
10 Min - Share current information, data and rationale for educating students on issues of Cybersecurity Concepts/Global Concerns and Career Opportunities
20 Min - Participants will use the jigsaw method to explore the following activities in groups to get a hands on feel for how each one assists in student understanding of topics (note, they won't finish, but will have time to explore one of the topics):
a. Sphero Password activity
b. Ethical Hacking Choice Board
c. App Wars activity
d. Diversity in the field study
10 Min - Debrief - allow participants opportunity to share their perceptions of activities and ask questions of each other
10 Min - Presentation of Cybersecurity Takeover Day
5 min - final Q and A and closing
