Session description

Mister Rogers was more than a nice guy in a sweater, he was also a learning scientist. Together, we’ll explore Rogers' blueprints for tapping and nurturing the curiosity, creativity and potential inherent in every child. With inspiring, actionable examples, you'll learn how digital age educators like you can follow in Rogers' footsteps.

Purpose & objective

Fred Rogers was more than a nice guy in a sweater—he was also a learning scientist who was decades ahead of his time. In this session, we’ll explore how "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" nurtured curiosity, creativity, and the other tools for learning that today's experts consider essential for students' success. Drawing on inspiring, actionable examples from Remake Learning—an internationally renowned network of educators, scientists, artists, and makers, many of whom worked with Rogers himself—we'll explore how "the Fred Method" can help educators leverage the arts, technology, the built environment, and more to spark wonder, belonging, and joy.

Outline

Our presentation is about 45 minutes long, comprising several short lessons that explore the connections between "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and the learning sciences. Each lesson unpacks a different aspect of Rogers' approach, revealing the "Neighborhood" to be more than a television program—in many ways, it's also a blueprint that educators can continue to learn from today.

Each lesson includes an actionable takeaway for educators and an opportunity for engagement, including audience polls, quick contests (with prizes!), and moments of quiet reflection.

We generally save the last 15-20 minutes for Q&A and "Fred stories," which are opportunities for attendees to share how Rogers impacted their lives. Without exception, these stories are inspirational, insightful, and healing, ending the session on an energized, hopeful note.
