Session description

You’ll engage in STEM to the Future’s one-of=a-kind pedagogy that combines hands-on STEAM skills and leadership development through the lens of social justice and activism to support elementary and middle school Black and Latinx students as they develop solutions to meet the needs of their community.

Purpose & objective

One main purpose of this presentation is for educators to walk away with an understanding of research that states the importance of creating learning experiences that are aligned to social change.

Participants will become familiar with tools such as the NYU Culturally Responsive Curriculum Scorecard and the Historically Responsive Literacy Framework that will support them in creating curriculum and programs that are culturally relevant, rooted in social justice, and connected to community.

Outline

Introduction 5 minutes
jacob adams, Founder and Executive Director of STEM to the Future, introduces himself, gives a brief overview of his founder story and how his time at a Blue Ribbon, no excuse charter led to the development of STTF.

STEM to the Future + Liberatory Education Overview 15 minutes
For the next 15 minutes participants will be exposed to and engage with STEM to the Future’s non-traditional yet necessary approach to STEM/STEAM education. They will see testimonials and examples from elementary and middle school youth who are using STEAM to address unmet needs in their community by doing things such as hosting Clean Air Day events that teach the community about environmental racism, using their robots to deliver PPE to elders during the height of the pandemic, and designing and selling clothes to raise awareness and funds for members of the LGBTQ community. This portion of the presentation will include interactive polls and turn and talks to promote engagement and community learning.

Resource Sharing 5 minutes
Participants will be provided with resources such as the Historically Responsive Literacy framework, the Culturally Responsive Curriculum Scorecard, Excerpts from the Case Against Competition, and STTF lessons that educators can use to not only integrate STEAM into their curriculum but also liberatory practices.

Question and Answers 5 minutes
Participants are welcomed to share their experiences with liberatory education and ask any questions to jacob and the group.
