The organization's mission is about challenging how Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are thought about when it comes to professional and personal development. All of the organization's learning opportunities are free and very much rooting in the value of zero barrier to access.

Session description

Our session will explore the methodology we incorporated into our curriculum after recognizing challenges we faced in finding engaging and accessible materials for our deaf students. We introduced our students to STEAM and included it in our initiative to strengthen skill sets and also foster memorable experiences.

Purpose & objective

Our session will explore the methodology we incorporated into our curriculum after recognizing challenges we faced in finding engaging and accessible materials for our Deaf students. We introduced our students to STEAM and included it in our initiative to strengthen skill sets and also foster memorable experiences. By acknowledging the limited resources available for Deaf students, we took it upon ourselves to pursue different avenues. In partnership with Deaf Kids Code and online platforms, we created an enriched, engaging, and interactive learning environment to provide incredible academic and personal learning experiences within our school. Our daily experience working with such a special population (inner-city, socio-economically challenged, Deaf children), as well as being women-in-tech, women-of-color, and coming from diverse ethnic backgrounds, allows us to have a unique view and perspective that we believe is beneficial and impactful for educators across all areas of education.

Outline

Introduction - brief discussion of presenters’ backgrounds and experiences

Challenges we faced as educators of Deaf students - lack of resources, communication barriers, staff member’s lack of exposure and understanding of STEAM, lack of funding, lack of support from district administration

Our plan of action - brainstorming how to overcome barriers, doing the legwork and making connections,

Implementation - living the plan: experiences with Deaf Kids Code (basic coding, Rasberry Pi, simple robotics, Stratch, graphic design programs, circuitry), Skype Project (online research, astronomy research), live-virtual museum visits, and interviews with experts in their fields (cyber-security, aeronautics, UXI/project management through the use of technology)

The Future - the ongoing work to support and improve what we have created, continuously adding to the scaffold
