As the definition of inclusivity evolves, educators are seeking to provide accessible and inclusive spaces for learners to explore, create and reach their full potential. MakerSpaces provide a space for English language learners, individuals with learning differences, students with cultural and social differences to engage, collaborate and create.
This poster session will guide you through the planning, designing, execution and maintenance of an inclusive MakerSpace by removing the barriers of language and presumed previous experiences. Featured student creations and reflections will inspire you to start transforming your space.
Participants will:
• View the planning and collaboration with the diverse groups of potential users, including individuals with learning and mobility differences as well as various social identify groups.
• Immerse in an inclusive MakerSpace experience.
• Interact with adapted tools and a variety of resources.
• View student created products and student reflections recorded during and after the design process.
• Explore implementation and design of tools and resources.
• Walk away with the resources needed to immediately transform you MakerSpace.
The purpose of this session is to allow participants to explore and interact with a variety of components that have been designed to create an accessible and inclusive MakerSpace where everyone has the opportunity to embrace the maker mindset.
Participants will be engaged with a variety of tools and resources from our MakerSpace while they actively participate in creation and design challenges. Open exploration is available for participants to gain the hands-on experience.
Student created products will be on display along with their recorded reflections being played on a screen positioned near the products.
Participants will walk away with access to free, culturally and socially inclusive resources including 3D printable files, printable high-contrast images, translated labels for equipment, tools and supplies, printable QR codes linked to audio/video explanations of items, detailed task cards, checklist of sensory-friendly options and so much more.
