Ed Tech Teacher Leadership Coach
New York City Public Schools
@ginateso
Gina is a middle school special education teacher with a passion for STEM who became a District-wide EdTech Coach months before the pandemic. During the pandemic, Gina created opportunities to build community with and learn from teachers and students to better serve them. During those experiences, Gina learned that her obstacles with mental health and wellness were shared by many — encouraging her to pursue knowledge necessary to heal herself and others. Gina brings her love of the healing arts to everything she does and holds certifications such as Nature Therapy Guide, Yoga and Mindfulness Instructor, Stress Resilience Facilitator and Reiki Master.

Session description

Design powerful, edtech-enhanced learning environments by incorporating media balance, streamlining edtech and encouraging student voice and partnership. Leave this session with a myriad of ideas from research and the learning community, as well as a renewed sense of calm, to fully engage with this impactful conference.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to (1) create dialogue around mindful tech integration that will help develop powerful practices within the international edtech learning community and (2) to engage educators in mindful tech integration practices themselves so they can experience a sense of calm and remix these practices to use within their learning community. This workshop will be designed in a way that allows educators to experience mindful edtech integration themselves.

This presentation is centered around a professional learning track I am designing for NYC Public schools based on my previous work in edtech wellness. The three pillars of mindful tech integrations that I am offering are (1) media balance, (2) streamlining edtech use and (3) eliciting student voice and partnership. Please refer to the learning outcomes section below for participant outcomes.

Outline

**Introduction (15 minutes)**
*Welcome (5 minutes) As participants enter the room they will be asked to add-on to a collaborative backchannel (i.e., Padlet) to share mindfulness / wellness practices that they are currently using in their classroom, school or district.
*Mindfulness Practice 1: Breathing to reset the nervous system (5 minutes) To start, the facilitator will engage participants in a complete breath and alternate nostril breathing to reset the nervous system
*Honor the great work already happening (5 minutes) We will review the collaborative backchannel (i.e., Padlet) to explore the great things that educators are already doing. The facilitator will weave these ideas into the presentation and will focus more time on topics that are not already covered through participant prior knowledge.

**Research (15 minutes)**
*Share research (7 minutes) about the impacts of increased screen time and some research based methods to employ.
*Mindfulness Practice 2: Pause to make connections (7 minutes) Participants will take 3 minutes to practice breathing to reset the nervous system and will then be asked to reflect on one thing from the research portion that is relevant to their work or daily life. The last 5 minutes will be saved to share the reflection with a partner or small group.

**Mindful Edtech framework (15 minutes)**
*1. Media Balance - Participants will explore how the mindfulness practices we have been engaging in are a part of media balance and they will be presented with several more ideas for media breaks.
*2. Streamlining Edtech - Participants will discuss quick tips on how to declutter their Ed Tech Toolboxs
*3. Student voice and partnership - We will discuss the importance of and strategies for co-designing learning environments in partnership with youth
*Mindfulness Practice 3: Movement Choice (5 minutes) Participants will be given several choices on how to get their body moving to reset the nervous system and stretch out!

**Integration (15 minutes)**
*Next steps (7 minutes) Participants will have time to explore the additional resources shared and will be asked to identify their next steps for enhancing their mindful edtech integration practices. The next steps and associated resources will be added to the collaborative backchannel (i.e., Padlet)
*Questions / Resources needed (7 minutes) Participants will be able to ask questions of the facilitator and the other participants.
