Session description

The field of cybersecurity is growing and we can't keep up with the demand. We need to train our students, but we also need teachers of cybersecurity courses at the 7-12 level. Find out how one educator transitioned from ELA teacher to a high school cybersecurity teacher.

Purpose & objective

Participants will have an understanding of the need for a cybersecurity program or class in their district.

Participants will be able to determine next steps for creating or improving their cybersecurity program.

Participants will be able to recognize teachers that might be willing and able to transition from a core teaching course into cybersecurity.

The purpose of this session is to show teachers and other stakeholders that it is necessary to have some cybersecurity offerings within their district, and it is possible to have someone new to the content teaching the course.

Outline

I will begin the presentation with a discussion of the current state of cybersecurity, education needs, and the amount of cybersecurity teachers. I will also introduce the backchannel for questions and comments that I will address throughout the presentation. (10 minutes)

I will explain the Lakota Local Schools Cyber Academy and how it has grown in the past 4 years since the launch in 2019, and how our students are getting industry certifications, internships, scholarships, and job offers in high school. (10 minutes)

At this point I will give the audience 5 minutes to discuss together what this could look like in their own district. (5 minutes)

I will then describe my path through the past year, transitioning from a middle school ELA teacher and instructional coach to a high school cybersecurity teacher, including trainings I attended, PLNs I joined, and pre-built curriculum I used to create the general structure for my course. (20 minutes)

At this point I will give another 5 minutes to process and discuss thoughts on how this might look, educators that could be good candidates to teach cyber, and what steps they might need to take to create or improve their program. (5 minutes)

I will leave the last 10 minutes for questions and share out, and to address anything that came up within the backchannel. (10 minutes)
