Session description

Media literacy is an essential skill for students at all levels. In this session, we will discuss misinformation, strategies for teaching students, and resources for teachers to incorporate lateral reading into their classes.

Purpose & objective

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication and is of utmost importance for 21st century learners. The information age has brought with it exponential growth of technology, unimaginable connectivity to all corners of the globe, and an explosion of creativity. However, it has also created an environment rife for misinformation to be spread fast and far.

The goal of this session is to empower teachers with the vocabulary and some teaching tools to use media literacy more effectively in their classroom. As a poster session, we will discuss with attendees what they are currently doing in their classroom, explain some of the tools we’ve collected, and brainstorm with them how they could see themselves using it in their classrooms. If we are asked to do it in another format, we will follow a similar outline with audience participation in-person and digitally.

Participants will be able to:
-Define media literacy and identify how it works in their content area
-Collect a variety of teaching resources for media literacy
-Make a plan for a student project incorporating media literacy in their content area

Outline

As a poster session, we will discuss with attendees what they are currently doing in their classroom, explain some of the tools we’ve collected, and brainstorm with them how they could see themselves using it in their classrooms. We will have printed posters that participants can peruse as well as a short digital presentation that will play on a loop for other attendees to watch.

If we are asked to do it in another format, we will follow a similar outline with audience participation with in-person discussion and digital engagement tools.
