As a former educator of 14.5 years, I was able to build a computer science path and an esports program within my urban high school. I taught AP Computer Science, and saw the importance of college level courses in high schools for student success. Then I found my new role at Harrisburg University as the Director of Secondary Services, where I get to continue advocating for dual enrollment and college in the high school opportunities for students. I also assist in STEM learning programs and workforce development for high school teens.

I spent my first several years in education teaching chemistry and computer science. I am now an STEM Services Coordinator at Chester County Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania, where I focus on STEM, Science, Computer Science, Esports, and Tech Integration. I love to travel and present at conferences! My favorite conference to attend is ISTE and I had the privilege of presenting in 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2022, I had the opportunity to speak on ISTE MainStage about esports. Outside of school, I teach taekwondo, collect laptop stickers, and hang out with my dogs and husband.

Session description

This joint talk between the Pennsylvania Scholastic Esports League and Harrisburg University of Science and Technology will address the building of a college and career pipeline for esports coaches. PSEL and HU have partnered to build a pathway to learn more about esports and esports careers.

Purpose & objective

With the advent of scholastic esports in the past 5 years, students have been able to connect to a new activity within their high schools, but not all teachers feel comfortable in the shoes of and esports coach, or a general manager. The Pennsylvania Scholastic Esports League, with their partner Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, have been breaking down beariers for teachers to enter into this valuable space. With the creation of creative commons modules to help teachers build an understanding of esports, PSEL and HU are opening doors for others to enter. The modules that were built, can be utilized by a trainer and earn micro-badges to increase teacher efficacy in the esports realm. Additional training and courses can be found after, to help broaden the teacher understanding, which then matriculates down to the student learning level.
Our presentation in Google Slides, will utilize direct content about the work our partnership has completed in the past 6 months, events we have run in conjunction of one another, and a broad outlook for the state of esports within the scholastic setting. Additionally mini-polls, utilizing Menti-Meter, in the presentation will elicit participant feedback and interaction, while collecting valuable data for the understanding of esports in the ISTE teacher community
