Kristin is an Education Marketing and Community Coordinator for Common Sense Media. Apart from leading social media efforts for their Common Sense Education brand, she also coordinates their educator, school and district recognition programs, as well as the Common Sense Ambassadors program. Prior to this work, Kristin was a special needs educator for 14 years. Throughout her career, Kristin has worked to enhance and redefine how students learn through the use of EdTech & UDL to increase student access, motivation, & engagement with curriculum and content. She’s an advocate for the creative and innovative use of technology.

Session description

Podcasts provide opportunities to differentiate learning, address students' social-emotional well-being and nurture an inclusive classroom. We’ll navigate the landscape of kid-friendly podcasts, learn the proven benefits of bringing podcasts into interactive learning environments, and explore unique and creative ways to infuse podcasts into new and existing curriculum.

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn how podcasts can be used in the classroom to improve listening and literacy skills.

Participants will learn how to tailor existing curriculum to include opportunities for podcast use.

Participants will walk away with a concrete list of ready-to-use podcasts for the classroom.

0:00 - Why use podcasting in education?: Introduction to using podcasts in the classroom; attendees will learn the five central reasons that podcasts make great tools for learning content in the classroom, particularly in classrooms with diverse and multilingual students.

00:10 - Pedagogical Strategies/Activities: Session presenter(s) will walk-through several activities that can be done with students, using podcasts to teach content.

00:40 - Real-World Application and Examples: Attendees will be led through a discussion of real-world applications and examples of educators using podcasts in the classroom (across grade levels and subject matter content).

00:50 - Where to find excellent OER videos to deepen knowledge of podcasting in the classroom (provide resources): Attendees will receive a curated list of OER resources and have the opportunity to share their own resources via a collaborative document.
